The encoding failure
Consider the classic case. Somebody is introduced at a gathering, and ten minutes later the name is gone. It is natural to file that as a memory problem.
Reconstruct the moment, though. You were taking in a face, managing a handshake, reading the social situation and composing whatever you planned to say next. The name arrived in the middle of all that and received a fraction of a second of genuine attention. Nothing slipped away afterwards. Nothing was ever written down.
That is an attention failure wearing a memory failure's clothes, and the two respond to different things.
Why it matters commercially
This is where a good deal of disappointment in this category originates. Somebody whose actual problem is attention buys a product whose evidence concerns recall, waits three months, notices nothing, and concludes the entire shelf is a swindle.
They bought for the wrong complaint. The products are not interchangeable even when the marketing suggests they are — a focus support supplement, a concentration support supplement and a memory supplement are frequently the same bottle, but the evidence behind individual ingredients is not the same evidence.
Which ingredients speak to which
| Component | Measured on | Timescale |
|---|---|---|
| Theanine with caffeine | Attention: task switching, resisting interruption | Within two hours |
| Marigold lutein | Attention: one demanding task | Twelve months |
| Standardised ginkgo | Memory: appointments recalled, unprompted recall | Six weeks |
| Curcumin | Both, in one small study | Eighteen months |
Two of those are attention findings and arrive on wildly different clocks, which is worth knowing before buying anything described as a cognitive focus supplement.
What helps the attention half
Almost none of it is purchasable, and all of it works better than anything that is.
- Do one thing. The single largest lever, and the least used.
- Repeat a name aloud as you hear it. It forces the fraction of a second that encoding requires.
- Deal with the hearing. Straining to hear consumes exactly the attention that storing something needs.
- Move the hard task out of the afternoon trough.
- Sleep. Attention degrades before memory does, and recovers first.
