Six things, not one
Cognition in ordinary speech covers abilities that are genuinely separate, decline at different rates, and in some cases do not decline at all.
| Ability | What it is | With age |
|---|---|---|
| Processing speed | How fast an answer arrives | Declines first, and earliest |
| Working memory | How much you hold at once | Shrinks somewhat |
| Episodic memory | Events, conversations, where you put things | Retrieval slows; storage largely holds |
| Executive function | Planning, switching, inhibiting | Gradual decline |
| Crystallised knowledge | Vocabulary, accumulated expertise | Holds, often still growing at seventy-five |
| Procedural memory | Driving, instruments, craft | Extremely durable |
Which is why a cognitive function supplement is an almost contentless description. Six abilities, one phrase, and no indication of which is being addressed.
What “healthy cognitive function” signals
That wording is doing regulatory work rather than scientific work. Supporting healthy function in healthy people is a structure/function claim, which sits on one side of a legal line. Treating, preventing or improving a condition sits on the other and requires a drug approval nobody on this shelf has.
So when a label says it supports healthy cognitive function, read it as: this is a supplement, it is for people who are well, and no claim about disease is being made. That is genuinely informative once you know the convention.
Which of the six anything here speaks to
Two, narrowly. The ginkgo recall finding concerns episodic memory — specifically retrieving appointments and producing learned material unprompted. The theanine and caffeine result, and separately the lutein result, concern attention, which sits closest to executive function.
Nothing in this formula has been tested against processing speed, working memory, crystallised knowledge or procedural memory. Daily cognitive support, as a phrase, covers all six. The evidence covers two.
The practical use of knowing this
It makes the vaguer products easier to discard. If a label says cognitive wellness and nothing further, it has told you which shelf it is on and nothing else. If it names an ability and cites a study measuring that ability, it has told you something you can check.
